Designing diagrams for social issues

Michele Mauri, Paolo Ciuccarelli
Proceedings of DRS2016: Design + Research + Society - Future-Focused Thinking, 3, 941–956. https://doi.org/10.21606/drs.2016.185

@article{Mauri2016, abstract = {Emerging approaches in social sciences and new media studies involve inquiry into social issues via the web. By collecting, analysing and visualising digital traces (i.e. posts, tweets, comments), a " issue map " can be created in order to make visible and understandable the network of the actors involved and their position in any public debate. Drawing on experiences gathered during a European project, we identified a two-phases-approach for the creation of issue maps. In the two phases-exploration and communication-visualisations play a key role, with two different connotations: in the first, they act as analytical devices used by researchers. In the second, they become communicative artefacts for a larger public. In this paper, we describe how we defined this approach, outlining the theoretical background and its connections with communication design. We highlight the main criticalities found in designing the issue maps before finally presenting our results.}, author = {Mauri, Michele and Ciuccarelli, Paolo}, doi = {10.21606/drs.2016.185}, journal = {Proceedings of DRS2016: Design + Research + Society - Future-Focused Thinking}, keywords = {communication design,controversy,digital methods,information visualisation,issue mapping,mapping}, pages = {941--956}, title = {{Designing diagrams for social issues}}, url = {http://www.drs2016.org/185/}, volume = {3}, year = {2016} }

Firstly, we map companies registered in the area and analyse their connections through on- line hyperlinking. In this perspective we consider visualizations as transformation processes within the Data-Information-Knowledge (DIK) continuum. In the paper we discuss the continuum, and apply the transformation process model to the main disciplines of visualization. Visualizations represent powerful cognitive tools that surround our everyday life 1. By doing this we are able to think about visualization from a multidisciplinary perspective, exploring the role of visualizations in design practice, as artifacts that are used in facing problems of various degrees of complexity and nature. It seems that, when the discipline of Design integrate a systemic approach with the competences of designers in visualization, it can cope with dense situations, providing effective artefacts diagrams - to improve the decision process and making profit from the richness of complexity. The prior findings of the Complexity Science are here assumed as a theoretical framework to have an interpretative model on how the knowledge about systems could be organized and depicted. Three tools to produce effective diagrams, framing, graining and scaling are here discussed though six case studies.}, journal={Changes}, publisher={Allemandi}, author={Ciuccarelli, Paolo and Ricci, Donato and Valsecchi, Francesca}, editor={Cipolla, Carla and Peruccio, Pier PaoloEditors}, year={2008}, pages={1-17}}

Combining the opportunity offered by the findings of the Complexity Science with the framework of the multi-disciplinary debate on the meaning and use of diagrams, we propose a design methodology to help designers support their interventions in complex environments. The structural features analysis of Complex Systems has been our key point to outline this methodology to offer designers a new mindfulness in the use of design tools. This methodology is based on five phases: analysing, representing, pinpointing, timing and telling. It provides a theoretical framework that incorporates many tools suggesting a different use of them with a special attention to improve the designerʼs consciousness of the system he is designing in. When design is addressing complexity, diagrams could become generative tools that can be used to produce metadata relevant to the design process.}, author={Scagnetti, Gaia and Ricci, Donato and Baule, Giovanni and Ciuccarelli, Paolo}, editor={Poggenpohl, SharonEditor}, year={2007}}

Visual Geolocations. Repurposing online data to design alternative views

@article{Colombo2017, abstract = {Data produced by humans and machines is more and more heterogeneous, visual, and location based. This availability inspired in the last years a number of reactions from researchers, designers, and artists that, using different visual manipulations techniques, have attempted at repurposing this material to add meaning and design new perspectives with specific intentions. Three different approaches are described here: the design of interfaces for exploring satellite footage in novel ways, the analysis of urban esthetics through the visual manipulation of collections of user-generated contents, and the enrichment of geo-based datasets with the selection and rearrangement of web imagery.}, author = {Colombo, Gabriele and Ciuccarelli, Paolo and Mauri, Michele}, doi = {10.1177/2053951717702409}, issn = {2053-9517}, journal = {Big Data {\&} Society}, keywords = {Image,design,geography,place,territory,visualization}, month = {jun}, number = {1}, publisher = {SAGE PublicationsSage UK: London, England}, title = {{Visual Geolocations. Designing diagrams for Wikipedia: opening a reflection on the role of information visualization in collaborative projects

Michele Mauri, Azzurra Pini, Paolo Ciuccarelli
Information Design Journal, 23(1), 65–79.

@article{Mauri2017, abstract = {Despite the high usage of diagrams and images in Wikipedia, as well as across all Wikimedia projects, few studies have been conducted on the role of visual contents within the online encyclopedia and on the collaborative creation of diagrams. This article describes research that brought a group of designers into Wikipedia, with the goal of exploring how information designers act on this platform and how other users react to their involvement. Inspired by the WikiEdu Program, we engaged postgraduate design students in the creation of diagrams for Wikipedia and then followed the reactions of both users and designers to their work. The results of the experiment have been evaluated using built-in Wikipedia functions (e.g., page history and discussion pages) and through an anonymous survey among the students involved. This experience brought to light the different consideration granted to images and diagrams with respect to texts on the online encyclopedia. It also allowed a reflection on the role of designers in the knowledge production process, as well as on the meaning of producing “open” contents, which are meant to be improved by other people.}, author = {Mauri, Michele and Pini, Azzurra and Ciuccarelli, Paolo}, doi = {10.1075/idj.23.1.08mau}, issn = {0142-5471}, journal = {Information Design Journal}, number = {1}, pages = {65--79}, title = {{Designing diagrams for Wikipedia}}, url = {http://www.jbe-platform.com/content/journals/10.1075/idj.23.1.08mau}, volume = {23}, year = {2017} }

Opening the Black Box of Scholarly Communication Funding: A Public Data Infrastructure for Financial Flows in Academic Publishing

Stuart Lawson, Jonathan Gray, Michele Mauri
Open Library of Humanities, 2(1), 1–35. https://doi.org/10.16995/olh.72

@article{Lawson2016, abstract = {{\textless}p class="p1"{\textgreater}‘Public access to publicly funded research' has been one of the rallying calls of the global open access movement. Governments and public institutions around the world have mandated that publications supported by public funding sources should be publicly accessible. Publishers are experimenting with new models to widen access. Yet financial flows underpinning scholarly publishing remain complex and opaque. In this article we present work to trace and reassemble a picture of financial flows around the publication of journals in the UK in the midst of a national shift towards open access. We contend that the current lack of financial transparency around scholarly communication is an obstacle to evidence-based policy-making – leaving researchers, decision-makers and institutions in the dark about the systemic implications of new financial models. We conclude that obtaining a more joined up picture of financial flows is vital as a means for researchers, institutions and others to understand and shape changes to the sociotechnical systems that underpin scholarly communication.{\textless}/p{\textgreater}}, author = {Lawson, Stuart and Gray, Jonathan and Mauri, Michele}, doi = {10.16995/olh.72}, issn = {2056-6700}, journal = {Open Library of Humanities}, number = {1}, pages = {1--35}, title = {{Opening the Black Box of Scholarly Communication Funding: A Public Data Infrastructure for Financial Flows in Academic Publishing}}, volume = {2}, year = {2016} }

Tommaso Venturini, Donato Ricci, Michele Mauri, Axel Meunier, Lucy Kimbell

@article{Venturini2015, abstract = {Twenty years ago, Bruno Latour conceived Controversy Mapping (CM) as a method to train students in the observation and descrip- tion of sociotechnical debates. Since then, CM has evolved consid- erably, not only because of the many universities that have adopted and adjusted it to their context, but also because CM has become the pivot point of several international research projects. Since the very beginning of this enterprise, it has been clear that the main challenge for the method was to engage with actors of the controversies. To be sure, CM is not a method of social inter- vention. Unlike crisis management or conflict resolution, it is not meant to solve or channel debates (nor does it assume such inter- vention is always desirable). Yet, as extensively shown in geogra- phy, maps are never neutral representations. Cartography has always been a political tool and CM is not an exception. So, how could our tools and methods enhance democracy? What use will the public make of our maps? How can mapping improve the debate on science and technology?}, author = {Venturini, Tommaso and Ricci, Donato and Mauri, Michele and Kimbell, Lucy and Meunier, Axel}, doi = {10.1162/DESI_a_00340}, journal = {Design Issues}, month = {jul}, number = {3}, pages = {74--87}, title = {{Designing Controversies and Their Publics}}, url = {http://www.mitpressjournals.org/doi/10.1162/DESI{\_}a{\_}00340}, volume = {31}, year = {2015} }
