The 2018/2019 edition of the Final Synthesis Design Studio focused on exploring complex and controversial issues through data visualization and communication design. Students investigated topics related to six broad themes: datafication, climate change adaptation, addictions, food economics, hate speech, and migration.

The course was structured into three phases. Students first explored their topics through structured data from institutional sources, then used digital methods to investigate online debates, identify relevant actors, and map their positions. In the final phase, they transformed their research into communication artifacts aimed at engaging the public, encouraging dialogue, and taking a position on the issues explored.

Throughout the course, visualization was approached not only as a tool for analysis and communication, but also as a means of supporting public engagement and advocacy.

Student outputs

All student projects are documented on the 2018/2019 course website, organized according to the three phases of the course:

  1. Exploring Official Data: Visualizations based on structured data from institutional sources, providing an initial overview of the selected issues.
  2. Diving into the Web: Visual reports using digital methods to map online controversies, their actors, and their positions.
  3. Visualization for Advocacy: Communication artifacts and design interventions aimed at engaging the public and encouraging dialogue around controversial issues.
